IDENTIFY PROBLEM PROBLEM ANALYSIS

Identify Problems: What main situation or issues or problems behind the topic?

In order to choose a suitable topic we have had a group discussion and we have agreed to choose a topic that is always talked about. For group 3, we agreed to choose the topic “Do social media is good or not for teenagers” as it is often boasted of by modern society. Nowadays these issues have always been talked about in community and society. Why these issues happen is because teenagers do not control their time when using gadgets. They used gadgets for social media instead for their studies. Some of the teenagers used the social media platform for the right purpose but some of them do not use that platform for their studies or research even though there is a lot of information that they can gain through social media platforms. These problems occurred because they have been exposed to social media through gadgets that parents provide to them for their studies. They try to use all the social media platforms such as Instagram or Tiktok. Therefore, teenagers love to try all new things during their life.

Problem Analysis: Analyse the situation or issues from different perspective to identify main problem

As time goes by, social media helps teenagers to build relationships which is the root cause for this problem. Building relationships not only with their family and friends but also with themselves. The relationship teens have with themselves is essential to their own wellbeing and also to create healthy and happy relationships with others. Of course, we can just build relationships through offline interactions, but it is limited and superficial compared to online interactions. Apart from the fact that teenagers can have fun through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and many more, they can also deepen their interests and relationship with others. According to statistics, almost 88% of teenagers use social media because they feel more connected to their family and friends.

There are many benefits of media social, especially to finding and accessing information to do their research or study. In modern times nowadays, smartphones are friendly gadgets that have made everything reachable through touch and now almost all humans use smartphones. In 2021, the number of smartphone users in the world today is 6.378 Billion, which translates to 80.63% of the world’s population owning a smartphone. In total, the number of people that own a smart and feature phone is 7.101 Billion, making up 89.76% of the world’s population. From these states, we know that the use of a smartphone as a platform for social media is very important nowadays in that it helps teenagers learn about current events and stay up to date with online content.

Furthermore, social media is a good thing for teenagers because they can develop communication skills in a way that befriends other teenagers on social media. According to an analysis released by “Sinar Harian” found, teenagers make social media to train themselves to communicate and they also use social media as a place to find something technical in terms of manufacturing skills and even design.

I took someone's example, his name is Andika Putera. He has a 400k following on Tiktok and Instagram. He is an expert in business and a motivator. He used to start with social media to start a business. He uses Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp as a platform for him to train communication by making videos explaining the benefits of doing business and videos about the benefits of products.

Teenagers love to spend their time at night using social media instead of sleep. That will cause them to not have enough sleep. According to a US study more than 6500, 12-15 years old found those who spent more than 3 hours a day using social media might be at heightened risk for mental health. According to England study of more than 12,000, 13-16 years olds found that using social media more than 3 times a day predicted poor mental health and well-being in teens. In social media there is a lot of inappropriate content and that will lead them to follow the content. So I will say the root cause is social media has a lot of inappropriate content which is so dangerous for teenagers to follow. Parents have to control the activity of their teenagers when they use social media. Parents just have to ask what they are doing with social media. Government also can make a campaign for all teenagers so they can know the correct way of using social media.

According to US students, the most common kind of online harassment is comments (22.5%). Aside from spreading rumours (20.1%) and making sexual remarks (12.1%), cyberbullies in the United States frequently use aggressive and derogatory words, threats, profile hacking, and photo-sharing without consent(Justin, 2019). While the statistics and facts concerning cyberbullying presented above are disturbing, the growing epidemic of cyberbullying does have a silver lining. Governments all throughout the world are working to control and prevent cyberbullying, and there is a growing awareness of the problem. Many social media platforms are striving to address the issue as well. Finally, teach your children about cyberbullying, including what it is, how it occurs, and how to avoid it. Education is the only true solution, as it has always been.

Spending too much time on social media can be said as a root cause for this problem. Teenagers feel spending time on social media is very comfortable until it makes them lazy to get out from that and mingle with real people. They find that connecting people through social media is much easier compared to meeting new people face to face as it is consuming their energy and time to go out from their place. Instead they are choosing the easier way but as days pass they are trying to find solutions for every problem through social media which can be harmful for their personal life and career. According to the American Psychological Association (Schlenker, B. R., & Leary, M. R. (1982). Social anxiety and self-presentation: A conceptualization model. Psychological Bulletin, 92(3), 641–669.), people who use social media more are getting social anxiety when meeting with real people because they get used to imaginary people or audiences through social media.

In conclusion, we have discussed and agreed that choosing social media is not good for teenagers  because there are too many shortcomings of the benefits of social media to teenagers. This will have a negative impact on today's teenagers. It will affect the daily lives of teenagers and will have an impact on their learning.
